Service description

The National Library of Finland has for the time being two library system services: one based on Voyager that is being phased out; and the new service based on Koha.

Koha Services

The National Library of Finland and CSC – IT Centre for Science Ltd in partnership offer libraries Koha library system and the server platfrom. First scientific libraries in Finland iplemented Koha in 2018, and in 2019 it will be introduced in some 15 others. The implementatios project has web pages of its own (in Finnish):  https://www.kiwi.fi/display/KK.

Koha (https://koha-community.org/) is an open source code system. It is popular in Finnish public libraries (https://koha-suomi.fi/, in Finnish).

Unlike in the Voyager services, there is no consortium. The implementation project has a loose project organisation.

Voyager Services

The National Library of Finland coordinates the use of the Voyager library system and its server environment on behalf of the system consortia. Current Linnea2 and AMKIT consortia comprise of university libraries, polytechnic libraries under the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Library of Parliament, the National Repository Library and the Library of Statistics.

The service includes communication with system and server environment providers as well as providing support to libraries in their day-to-day use of the system. Work is performed under supervision of library system consortia and supported by working groups formed from library specialists. The use of the system will be developed as a part of the overall service range for libraries.

Through the Library System Service, the National Library of Finland coordinates the acquisition and use of the library system and its server environment. Currently, its customers include university libraries, university of applied sciences libraries and some special libraries, which have formed among them two consortia for the division of costs and management of the system.  The library system consortium formed by university libraries, the National Library of Finland and the largest special libraries is called Linnea2. Universities of applied sciences under the Ministry of Education and Culture have formed the AMKIT library cooperation consortium. The Linnea2 consortium has been using the Voyager library system provided by Ex Libris since 2001.  Libraries in the AMKIT consortium gradually started using it in 2001–2004.

The National Library of Finland manages contact between the system provider and consortia through assigned contact persons on each side as well as the system provider’s support.

The server environment provider of the library system for both consortia during the use of the Voyager system has been the government-owned and Ministry of Education and Culture-administered CSC – IT Center for Science. The National Library of Finland represents the Linnea2 consortium in quality meetings held with CSC and the AMKIT consortium, which discuss the service received from CSC. CSC also handles the updates to the Voyager system and develops the server environment.

The Library System Service also includes support for libraries in using the system. The use of the system will be developed as a part of the overall service range for libraries. The work is performed under supervision of library system consortia and supported by working groups formed from library specialists.

All Finnish Voyager users are in the process of switching over to other systems, and the services are to be phased out.
