This accessibility statement for the https://melinda.kansalliskirjasto.fi service has been created on 31 March 2022. The service is subject to the Act on the Provision of Digital Services, which requires public web services to be accessible. The accessibility requirements mentioned in the statement are listed in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1.

We have assessed the accessibility of the service ourselves.

Conformance status

The service is partially conformant with the accessibility requirements.

Non-accessible content

Unreasonable burden

The software behind the Melinda OPAC is delivered by a third party, and a part of the source code is proprietary. The melinda.kansalliskirjasto.fi site thus uses elements that we cannot access or modify ourselves. The program as a whole is rather old, and we are in the process of acquiring an entirely new software solution. The whole service will thus be renewed in the near future. If users cannot find the information they need in the current OPAC, they can send a request for information to [email protected].

The website does not entirely conform to the requirements

Perceivable: Empty labels

Non-accessible content

The check boxes for search results and some fields have empty labels. These results are generated by proprietary code, and we cannot modify the way in which they are displayed. An aria-label or title attribute has been added to these elements to help users.

Unfulfilled accessibility requirement

1.1.1 Non-text content

Perceivable: Scrolling in two dimensions

Non-accessible content

At 400% zoom, some of the content requires also horizontal scrolling.

Unfulfilled accessibility requirement

1.4.10 Reflow

Perceivable: Insufficient contrast in drop-down menu

Non-accessible content

The contrast between the border and background of a drop-down menu generated by proprietary code in the software is insufficient.

Unfulfilled accessibility requirement

1.4.11 Non-text contrast

Perceivable: Text spacing has not been checked

Non-accessible content

Text spacing has not been checked systematically. A large part of the text displayed (the actual search results) is generated directly from the database at each search and its formatting is based on proprietary code.

Unfulfilled accessibility requirement

1.4.12 Text spacing

Understandable: There may be change of context on input

Non-accessible content

Clicking buttons and links may open search results either in the same window or a new window. This functionality has not been systematically tested or documented.

Unfulfilled accessibility requirement

3.2.2 On input

Understandable: Error identification has not been tested

Non-accessible content

The program provides error messages for missing input, but error identification has not been systematically tested.

Unfulfilled accessibility requirement

3.3.1 Error identification

Robust: Completion of elements has not been tested

Non-accessible content

It has not been systematically checked whether all elements are complete and conform to specifications. A part of the elements used comes from the proprietary code of third-party software.

Unfulfilled accessibility requirement

4.1.1 Parsing

Robust: Name, role, value not tested

Non-accessible content

It has not been systematically checked whether the name and role of user interface components can be programmatically determined, the states, properties, and values that can be set by the user can be programmatically set, and notification of changes to these items is available to user agents, including assistive technologies.

Unfulfilled accessibility requirement

4.1.2 Name, Role, Value
