ISBN identifier

An ISBN consists of the letters ISBN and 13 digits separated into five elements with hyphens:

 

ISBN 978-951-98548-9-2

978=prefix
951=country code or language group code
98548=publisher code
9=publication code
2=check digit

 

The prefix 978 is an GTIN / EAN-13 prefix.
The country code 951 or 952 indicates that the book or other monographic publication was published in Finland.
The publisher code varies from one to five digits depending on the scope of publishing.
The publication code identifies a specific publication by a certain publisher.
The check digit is calculated using the corresponding EAN-13 algorithm (modulus 10) and can no longer be the letter X.

ISMN identifier

An ISMN consists of the letters ISMN and 13 digits separated into five elements with hyphens:

 

ISMN 979-0-321-76543-1 

979-0=prefix
321=publisher code
76543=publication code
1=check digit

 

The prefix 979-0 is an GTIN / EAN-13 prefix 
The publisher code indicates the publisher of the sheet music publication. The length of the publisher code varies depending on the scope of publishing.
The publication code identifies a particular edition and its various publication formats, e.g., orchestral score, miniature score, set of wind parts or the oboe part. Its length is determined by the length of the publisher code.
The check digit is automatically calculated and can be used to automatically ensure that the ISMN identifier is correct.
